BVP – Binocular Visual Perimetry

This examination is principally performed to renew the driving licence of subjects with eye diseases, diabetics and/or hypertensive subjects. On 11 January 2011 Italy enforced the Decree of the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transports of 30/11/2010, published on the Italian Official Gazette no. 201 of 27/12/2010, which applies Directive 2009/112/EC on the physical requirements and related medical investigations to obtain issuance or renewal of the driving licence.

Section 1 of article 1 of the Decree rules the following: “The issuance and confirmation of validity of the driving licence to subjects with either eye diseases, or diabetics or epileptic subjects is subordinated to verification of the requirements establishedd
by enclosures I, II, III, respectively, that form an integral part of this decree.” Said requirements include the evaluation of the binocular visual field. Limit values of the binocular visual field required by subjects with eye diseases who are NOT SINGLE-EYED include:

Group 1: drivers of vehicles belonging to categories A, B, B + E and to subcategories A1 and B1

Group 2: drivers of vehicles belonging to categories C, C + E, D, D + E and to subcategories C1, C1 + E, D1 and D1 + E

Single-eyed subjects: only Group 1 licences
